FAQ
Frequently Asked Fishing Questions
WHAT MAKES YOUR GUIDED FISHING ADVENTURES DIFFERENT?
Our guided fishing adventures are built around personalised service, expert local knowledge, and a genuine passion for fishing. Led by owner and head guide Goose, who brings over four decades of local fishing experience to every trip, we offer guests an authentic and highly informed fishing adventure based on years of hands-on knowledge of the Jeffreys Bay coastline and surrounding waters.
We keep groups small to ensure every guest receives individual attention, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced angler. Our guides are patient, knowledgeable, and dedicated to making your experience enjoyable, educational, and rewarding.
Rather than following a fixed plan, each adventure is tailored to the conditions on the day, allowing us to fish the most productive locations and maximise your chances of success. With professional guidance, a strong focus on safety, and extensive local experience, we aim to deliver an authentic fishing experience from start to finish.
What truly sets us apart is the personal approach we take with every guest. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a relaxed and friendly environment where you feel part of the adventure. We believe that guests arrive as clients and leave as friends. We take pride in creating memorable experiences that leave guests with great stories, lasting memories, and a desire to return for another fishing adventure.
WHAT FISH CAN WE EXPECT TO CATCH?
What you catch depends on the season, sea conditions, and time of year. There are a variety of species in the area throughout the year, and fishing opportunities change regularly with the conditions.
There are too many species to list individually, so we recommend visiting the species section on our website for more detailed information on what is commonly targeted. On the day, your guide will assess the conditions and choose the best location and approach to give you the highest possible chance of a successful and enjoyable fishing experience.
CAN WE CUSTOMISE OUR CHARTER?
Yes. We can tailor a trip to suit your group, including the location, duration, and target species. Tell us what you have in mind, and we’ll put together options that match your preferences.
CAN NON-FISHING PARTNERS JOIN?
Yes. Non-fishing companions are welcome on all trips. Please let us know in advance so we can discuss the available options and ensure the experience is suitable and enjoyable for everyone in your group.
WILL WE GET PHOTOS OR VIDEOS OF OUR EXPERIENCE?
Yes. High-quality photos and short videos are included as part of your package. Our guides will capture key moments throughout your trip, including catches, action shots, group photos, and time spent enjoying your day on the beach. This allows you to relax and enjoy the experience while we take care of capturing the memories for you.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR FISHING?
Fishing is excellent year-round, with each season offering different conditions and opportunities. We’ll help you choose the best dates based on what you’d like to catch and your preferred weather conditions.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING ON THE TRIP?
Please bring sun protection, comfortable clothing (including a wind- and waterproof jacket), any chronic medication, identification, phone, and snacks/drinks (unless pre-arranged). We’ll confirm any additional recommendations when you book, based on the duration, venue, and conditions of your chosen package.
WHAT MEALS ARE INCLUDED IN THE FULLY INCLUSIVE PACKAGES?
Our fully inclusive multi-day packages include daily meals, refreshments, and selected beverages throughout your stay. Depending on the package, this may include breakfasts, packed lunches, beach braais (BBQs), and freshly prepared evening meals.
All catering is prepared by a qualified chef, ensuring restaurant-quality meals throughout your stay. If you have any dietary requirements or preferences, please let us know when booking and we will do our best to accommodate them.
WHAT SAFETY MEASURES DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE?
Safety is our top priority. Our guides are first-aid trained and carry essential safety equipment and communication devices on every charter. We carefully assess weather, sea, and fishing conditions before every trip and only operate when conditions are suitable. Fish Fighters Fishing Adventures is proud to have maintained a 100% safety record, with no safety incidents on any guided trips over the past 15 years.
I'M VISITING FROM OVERSEAS – WILL I BE SAFE?
Yes. We regularly host guests from abroad and have maintained a 100% safety record on all guided charters to date. Jeffreys Bay is a relaxed coastal holiday town known for its tourism, surfing, and outdoor lifestyle, and visitors commonly enjoy walking, fishing, and shopping in the area. Our guides provide full local support, select appropriate fishing locations, and stay with you throughout the experience to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
DO I NEED A FISHING PERMIT OR LICENCE?
Yes. A recreational fishing permit is required in South Africa. If you’re visiting from overseas, don’t worry—we can sort it for you and ensure everything is in place before your trip. Our guides will also advise on all relevant regulations, including species limits and protected areas, so you can simply enjoy the experience.
DO YOU HELP WITH ACCOMMODATION?
Yes. We can assist with booking trusted local accommodation options close to our fishing areas in Jeffreys Bay, suitable for different budgets. Let us know your preferences when booking, and we’ll help arrange the most suitable option for your stay. We are also happy to advise on the best areas to stay based on your chosen package and travel plans.
HOW DO WE PAY FOR OUR BOOKING?
We accept secure electronic payments and bank transfers. A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking and reserve your preferred date. The remaining balance must be paid in full prior to your arrival. Full payment details will be provided upon booking confirmation.
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO JOIN A CHARTER?
Not at all. All skill levels are welcome, from first-timers to experienced anglers. Our guides will walk you through everything, from setting up the tackle to landing a fish, and will share tips throughout the session.
HOW MANY GUESTS CAN JOIN A CHARTER?
We keep groups small to ensure a personal, high-quality experience. Most charters are designed for up to 2–6 guests, allowing each person to receive the attention and guidance they need.
ARE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WELCOME?
Yes. We love to accommodate families and children on our charters. Trips can be adapted to suit different ages and experience levels, and our guides will ensure everyone feels comfortable, safe, and involved throughout the experience.
Please let us know in advance if you are bringing children so we can plan the most suitable option for your group.
DO YOU SUPPLY ALL FISHING EQUIPMENT?
Yes. We provide quality rods, reels, bait, and tackle. You’re also welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.
DO I NEED TO BE FIT TO BOOK A CHARTER?
Not necessarily. Most trips are suitable for anglers of varying fitness levels. The exception is when targeting large sharks and rays, where fights can last several hours and require stamina, determination, and teamwork. Our guides are always on hand to assist and can take over the rod if you need a break, ensuring you still enjoy the experience.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD WE BOOK?
To secure your preferred date, we recommend booking as early as possible, especially during peak season (October to April).
ARE FOOD AND DRINKS INCLUDED?
You’re welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks, or we can arrange extras such as lunch packs, drinks, or a beach braai (BBQ). Simply let us know in advance. All of the above is included in our multi-day packages.
CAN WE KEEP THE FISH WE CATCH?
We follow a strict ethical and conservation-focused approach: catch, measure, tag, and release. Where regulations permit, we may occasionally keep a fish for the pan, provided it is of legal size and not listed as an endangered or protected species. Our guides are committed to sustainable fishing practices and will advise you on applicable regulations, species restrictions, and daily bag limits for the fish being targeted.
Where a suitable fish is legally retained, guests on our fully inclusive multi-day packages can enjoy a memorable ocean-to-table experience, with their fresh catch professionally prepared and cooked by our chef.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD ON THE DAY OF OUR CHARTER?
We monitor weather and sea conditions closely before every trip. Thanks to the unique coastline around Jeffreys Bay, with its many protected bays, points, and headlands, we are often able to fish comfortably and safely even when conditions are less than ideal elsewhere. If conditions are deemed unsafe, we will reschedule your charter where possible. Refunds, where applicable, are subject to the terms and conditions of your chosen package. Your safety always comes first.
DO YOU CATER FOR INTERNATIONAL GUESTS?
Absolutely. Catering for international guests is one of our specialities. We regularly host visitors from the UK, Europe, and many other countries, providing a seamless and enjoyable fishing experience from start to finish.
Our guides are experienced in hosting overseas anglers and will ensure everything is clearly explained, from equipment and techniques to safety procedures and local regulations. We are also happy to assist with local advice, accommodation recommendations, permits, and trip planning where needed.
Many of our international guests have shared their experiences in our Google reviews, where you can read first-hand feedback about our guided fishing trips, hospitality, and overall experience.
