Jeffreys Bay and the surrounding Eastern Cape coastline offer some of the most consistent and rewarding edible shore fishing in South Africa. Anglers can target legendary species such as Kob, Garrick, and a variety of other highly sought-after inshore fish. These waters provide excellent opportunities for both dedicated species hunters and anglers chasing trophy-sized fish.

Musselcracker (Cracker)
Sparodon durbanensis
Broad-bodied reef bruisers that demand strong tackle and quick reflexes. Feeding mainly on shellfish, they inhabit rocky terrain and are most active in winter and spring. Commonly caught in the Eastern Cape’s rugged coastal zones.

Poenskop (Black Musselcracker)
Cymatoceps nasutus
Massive, reef-dwelling beasts with a varied diet. These heavy hitters lurk in deep offshore reefs but can be landed from shore under the right conditions. Found throughout Jeffreys Bay and the wider Eastern Cape, they’re dirty fighters that love to smash tackle.

Garrick (Leervis)
Lichia amia
A top sport fish of the Eastern Cape, Garrick are aggressive and fast, perfect for lure and live-bait fishing. Often seen hunting in the shallows, they’re a favourite for light tackle fans and can be caught year-round.

White Steenbras
Lithognathus lithognathus
Elegant surf zone cruisers known for their strength and speed. They feed on worms, mussels, and crabs, especially during cooler months. Commonly caught along sandy beaches near Jeffreys Bay and further along the Eastern Cape coast.

Baardman
Umbrina canariensis
Elusive and often found in calm, shallow waters, Baardman feed on crabs and worms and are great fun on ultra-light gear. These subtle feeders are widespread in the Eastern Cape’s surf zones.

Kob (Kabeljou)
Argyrosomus japonicus
The prized trophy fish of Jeffreys Bay, Kob are apex inshore predators that love lures, live bait, and structure. They grow massive, and the chance to land a 100-pounder keeps anglers coming back.
Jeffreys Bay is one of the best destinations in the world to target large Kob, especially during winter and early summer.

Spotted Grunter
Pomadasys commersonnii
Clever and cautious, Spotted Grunter are known for their subtle bites and unpredictable fights. They thrive in estuary mouths and shallow surf zones, often feeding on prawns and worms. Perfect for light tackle anglers looking for a technical challenge. Common along the Eastern Cape’s estuarine systems and surf edges.

Shad (Elf)
Pomatomus saltatrix
Aggressive, lightning-fast predators that smash lures and cut baits with equal enthusiasm. Shad are a favourite among surf anglers for their explosive takes and schooling behaviour. Often found hunting baitfish near the surface, especially during early mornings and late afternoons. Jeffreys Bay offers excellent Elf fishing during warm water conditions, particularly near rocky areas.

Cape Stumpnose
Rhabdosargus holubi
A small but spirited estuary and surf-zone bream that offers great fun on ultra-light setups. Cape Stumpnose love shallow, calm waters with lots of sand and seagrass, where they feed on tiny crustaceans and organic debris. They’re plentiful in the tidal areas near Jeffreys Bay and a great target for younger or novice anglers.

Zebra Bream
Diplodus sargus capensis
A less common, but scrappy reef species often found near submerged rocky ledges. Most are caught on redbait and are a strong fight for their size. Found in various rocky spots across the Eastern Cape.

Blacktail
Diplodus capensis
One of the most common species along the coast, Blacktail are ideal for beginners and kids. They’re easy to catch and fun on ultra-light tackle, making them a staple species in the Jeffreys Bay area and beyond.

Galjoen
Dichistius capensis
South Africa’s national fish and a cult classic for shore anglers. Galjoen love rough seas and respond well to matured redbait. They are commonly targeted during winter storms, particularly along the reefy shores near Jeffreys Bay.

Bronze Bream
Pachymetopon grande
